To the Editor:
When visiting Yad Vashem, the holocaust museum in Israel, I saw something that will never leave me.
Exhibits started with propagandist media marginalizing and lying about Jews day in and day out. A lie told often enough eventually will be perceived as truth.
In among the unspeakable horror, what struck me the most was a picture of a Jewish woman at a train station sitting on her upright suitcase drinking a cup of coffee from a pretty cup and saucer. The boxcars behind her would transport her to her death down the tracks.
I thought, how could that woman be drinking coffee? What would make her think that all was normal? Then I saw a picture of the motto of the death camps, which read, “Deceive them every step of the way until they are dead.”
Someone had given this woman coffee. How could she perceive them as her captor?
Millions were goaded onto the boxcars with the promise of a job down the tracks. Once there, they were promised clean clothes, and when stripped down went reluctantly into the “showers.”
