Beauty in the mundane
So you thought used plastic was fit only for the bin. Think again. Plastic undergoes enhancement in the hands of Kochi-based materials artist, Emmanuelle Faussart Odye (pronounced Odi). At her recently opened studio, ‘Made In India' at Bazaar Road in Mattancherry, the French artist has showcased ingeniously crafted pieces of plastic art. She is one of the few artists here who are engaged in the ‘upcycling' movement and upgrades rejected, much-maligned plastic.
Cause of upcycling
“I discovered a new facet to plastic in India,” says the artist who has been to India several times before as a tour operator. But ever since she moved to Kochi seven years ago, after her retirement, she has taken up the cause of upcycling plastic.
Made In India is quirky, freaky and non-conformist in interiors and décor. The studio's lavender coloured flooring and lavender painted oil drums as showcase stands evoke a fairyland ambience. A Neverland, where childhood dreams float and the fanciful comes alive.
