BOOK REVIEW: Ideas: 365 Recipes for Every Day of the Year

I ALWAYS fall back on Woolworths’ chicken schnitzels with baby potatoes and steamed veggies. It’s my standard go-to supper when standing in the kitchen for a second more than is needed seems just too much to handle. But it appears I won’t have to resort to this dull dish for much longer. The Ideas: 365 Recipes for Every Day of the Year cook book is filled with recipes for which the preparation time is a mere 15 minutes and the cooking time 10.
The book is based on recipes from the monthly Ideas magazine. It was on one of these days, when I couldn’t face my kitchen, that I tried the beef and avocado salad. Despite its rather unimaginative name, the salad was a wonderful mixture of flavours.
The beef strips were cooked in a sticky marinade of soy sauce, lemon juice and honey and served on a peppery salad of spinach leaves, rocket and watercress.
The creamy avocado comple mented the sweetness of the marinade, and crusty bread was perfect to scoop up what remained of the sticky sauce on my plate.
