Cheap Eats: Rico's Deli a hidden treasure
Ambience — Rico’s Deli is inside the Boardwalk Condo building, a trendy downtown dwelling that, for lack of a better description, has a serious “Melrose Place” vibe to it. There are some tables in the common area outside the deli, but it’s configured for takeout. The deli doubles as a coffee shop called Liquid Cargo.
Wait for food — My food was ready in about 10 minutes each time, during which Nelson chatted politely with me and other customers while handling orders.
Chow down — On my first visit, I ordered the daily special, which was a chicken Cordon Bleu wrap, with chunks of roasted chicken, sliced ham and Swiss cheese with a subtle, light bleu cheese sauce, plus a cup of stuffed pepper soup — sausage, rice and chopped green peppers in a mildly spicy tomato base — for $2.75.
On my second visit, I grabbed another daily special — a barbecue chicken and bacon wrap, which consisted of roasted chicken, Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce (the best!), and cheddar cheese.

In 1985, my brother, Chef Larry Raymond perfected the recipe for family and joined in our sweet and spicy barbecue sauce to the countrys largest rib cook-off. He named it after the nickname I got while playing basketball on the west side of Chicago – "Sweet Baby Ray".
